Evolving Definition of Sociomuseology: proposal for reflection
Mário C. Moutinho
ICTOP Annual Conference Lisbon 2008, New approaches to museum studies and training: a critical review, October, 9 to 11, 2008
Sociomuseology expresses a considerable amount of the effort made to suit museological facilities to the conditions of contemporary society. The process of opening up the museum, as well as its organic relation with the social context that infuses it with life, has resulted in the need to structure and clarify the relations, notions and concepts that may define this process. Sociomuseology is thus a scientific field of teaching, research and performance which emphasizes the articulation of museology, in particular, with the areas of knowledge covered by Human Sciences, Development Studies, Services Science, and Urban and Rural Planning. The multidisciplinary approach of Sociomuseology aims to strengthen the acknowledgement of museology as a resource for the sustainable development of Humanity, based on equal opportunities as well as social and economic inclusion. Sociomuseology bases its social intervention on mankind’s cultural and natural heritage, both tangible and intangible.

What is SSME? Service Science, Management, and Engineering Service Science or Service Science, Management and Engineering (SSME) is a growing multi-disciplinary research and academic effort that integrates aspects of established fields like computer science, operations research, engineering, management sciences, business strategy, social and cognitive sciences, and legal sciences. Global markets are increasingly service-based economies. Employment growth will be concentrated in the service-providing sectors of the global economy. Service innovation is needed to maintain profits.Service design, development, marketing and delivery all require methods to make service businesses more efficient and scalable. Practitioners need depth and breadth in combinations of technology, business, and organizational studies, even at the undergraduate level. The goal of Service Science is to nourish productivity, quality, and learning and innovation rates across the service sector. We hope the resources on this site help you to better understand and engage in the evolving discipline.

Museums as service providers Mário C. Moutinho The present paper discusses the complex understanding of Museum as an entity that provides services. Indeed we are far from seeing museums fully acting as services since the rationale of the way they operate derives from the permanent concession of grants either from state budgets or from beneficent institutions. In order to do this, we use reflections presented in previous papers, where we considered these issues separately; we now believe they will gain some coherence when articulated with the reflection on museums seen in their possible, albeit inadequately assumed, condition as service providers.
We shall consider some aspects of the introduction in museums of the new information and communication technologies (NICT) as part of this process. On the one hand, these technologies open doors, and some museums take good advantage of that; but on the other hand their being used in a limited way does not enable the realisation of the role they can play, with multiple benefits from the organisational point of view, fostering innovation and creating new service concepts that are more aware of the world we live in.
